Pain is a multifaceted experience shaped by emotional, cognitive, and social influences. In this interactive presentation, we will explore the biopsychosocial complexity of chronic pain and its intersections with mental health and substance use. Drawing on extensive clinical experience and years of teaching interprofessional learners, Dr. Franks and Dr. Lawlis will illustrate practical approaches for assessment, goal setting, communication, and interventions that promote compassionate, patient-centered care and sustainable outcomes in pain management.
Objectives:
  1. Acquire knowledge of the intersections of emotional, mental, and behavioral health with chronic pain and unhealthy substance use.
  2. Develop and apply baseline evaluation and assessment skills to co-create individualized treatment goals that reflect a whole person approach to chronic pain management.
  3. Describe and integrate the psychology of chronic pain principles to conceptualize the patient experience at an individual level.
  4. Describe the use of cognitive-behavioral and mind-body self-regulation strategies in the management of chronic pain.
  5. Utilize evidence based adjunctive and complementary strategies that may assist in the management of chronic pain
