Objectives:

1. Describe the types, scope, prevalence, and market of human trafficking today.

2. Identify common demographics of the victims and the traffickers.

3. Recognize the recruitment and grooming process of traffickers.

4. Outline strategies for detection and assessment of trafficked survivors.

5. Introduce trauma-informed treatment and multidisciplinary collaboration with local, state, and national resources.

This class is designed to engage mental health providers with knowledge about the complex and troubling practices of human trafficking within the context of human rights and social justice perspectives. Building on this understanding of modern day slavery, the course addresses the specific vulnerabilities of trafficked victims, the medical-psychosocial needs assessment of victims and issues related to direct service delivery. Specific attention will focus on the identification of the victims of trafficking, traffickers, and the impact of this crime on the global and local economy. A film will introduce attendees to real victims telling their stories of recruitment, trafficking and escape.
