The Narcissism of Kings, Part II

Presented by:

Tracy Underwood, PhD

Overview: Soar above the raging fire of Ancient Rome. Observe the Emperor Nero as a first responder to those left homeless and bankrupt. When blamed for the blaze, Nero used the best diversion tactic of kings: he found a scapegoat. Fly forward eighteen hundred years and just as many miles to another burning city: Moscow. Follow French soldiers, starved and frozen as they stagger back to France, in teh sleigh bell trail of their Emperor. Read Napoleon's 'spin letter' to French citizens claiming the Russian fiasco a success. Now glide across the opulent Field of Cloth of Gold in Renaissance Europe where two spoiled kings show off their wealth and bankrupt their treasuries. Watch the war of ego ignite then extinguish by the capable hands of their modest queens. This workshop explores narcissism in the workplace during the reigns of Nero, Henry VIII, and Napoleon.

Objectives:

  1. Explain how identity disorders in leaders cause confusion in national identity.
  2. Describe the organizational deterioration of government under narcissistic leadership and the demoralizing effects on bureaucrats.
  3. Describe the global consequences of narcissistic leadership.
  4. Contrast personality characteristics of the narcissistic leader with the rational leader.
