Childhood Attachment and Adult Mental Health
by
Thomas Burdenski, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Psychology & Counseling
Tarleton State University Southwest Metroplex
FWAPA is delighted to have Dr. Burdenski present a workshop on how childhood attachment styles affect future adult mental health. He plans to achieve the following objectives:
Clarify between the secure, anxious, avoidant, and mixed childhood attachment styles identified by Bowlby and Ainsworth.
Explain how the avoidant childhood attachment style tends to morph into avoidance and how the anxious style tends to morph into a pursuing style in adulthood.
Define the withdrawing and pursuing cycle in which highly distressed couples typically engage.
Distinguish between primary and secondary emotional responses and how engaging in each tends to either escalate or de-escalate emotional distress in intimate relationships.
